Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Difference Between Obstetrics and Gynaecology?
In obstetrics, we focus on caring for women before, during, and after pregnancy, while gynaecologists address general women’s health issues such as menstrual disorders, hormone imbalances, and reproductive system conditions. Many OBGYNs, like Dr Kabala, are trained in both areas.
How Often Should I Visit My Gynaecologist?
It’s recommended to have an annual gynaecology check-up to stay proactive about your reproductive health. However, the frequency may be higher if you have specific concerns or ongoing conditions that your gynae needs to monitor.
What Can I Expect During an Annual Check-Up With My Gynaecologist?
Dr Kabala will review your health history, perform a physical exam, a pelvic exam, and possibly a Pap smear if you are due.
At What Age Should I Start Seeing a Gynaecologist?
We advise women to start seeing their gynaecologist at the age of 21 or when they first become sexually active. However, you can see a gynaecologist earlier if you have specific concerns like painful periods or other reproductive health issues.
Do I Need to Prepare For My Gynaecologist Appointment?
You usually don’t need to prepare at all. For routine gynaecology check-ups, try to avoid douching or using vaginal products 24–48 hours beforehand to ensure accurate test results. It’s also best to avoid schedulling your check-up during your menstrual period. If you have questions, it’s often helpful to write them down in advance so you don’t forget to ask during your visit.
When Do I Need a Pap Smear, and How Often?
Similarly to your annual check-up, it’s advised to have your first pap smear at the age of 21 or when you first become sexually active. Depending on your history and risk factors, your gynaecologist may recommend one every three years—or every five years if combined with an HPV test—until age 65.
What Can I Do About Menopause Symptoms?
Menopause symptoms like hot flashes, mood changes, and sleep disturbances can be managed in various ways, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT), non-hormonal medications, lifestyle adjustments, and more. It’s best to discuss your specific symptoms with your gynaecologist for your particular needs.
